My pup keeps eating kitty litter and poop. I have 2 cats and they need to have access to the box. Any suggestions?

You put the box in a room that you can put a puppy gate across the door of. Simple. Baby gate. Cats jump it. Dogs don't. Not too challenging. We all have dealt with this for ever.

I got crafty and took a cardboard box, cut a hole big enough for the cat but too small for the dog and put the litter box inside. It solved 2 problems, the dog getting into it and the litter that the cat flings out of the box stays contained in the cardboard box. It's tacky though. You could also just store buy a cat box with a small entrance. The babygate is a good idea too. Or if you can find a place, put the box somewhere higher up. If all else fails it wouldn't hurt to clean it before the dog even gets the chance.

Have 2 cats and 2 litter boxes also have 2 dogs and went thru the same thing till we got smart.

Put litter boxes in the bathroom.Put a nail on the inside of the door and tied a boot lace to it.Then we screwed small hook in the door frame on the outside and squeezed it shut until there was just enough space in the hook to slide the boot lace thru.Pulled the door shut using the boot lace and measured the door being opened just enough for cats to go in and out then tied several knots in the lace so the knot was large enough to not slip thru the hole.

Our dogs are large and as pups were still bigger than the cats so everyone was happy.

If you have a small dog tho I don't know what to tell you.

Dogs love cat poos because cats do not thoroughly digest their food, therefore, poos taste like the food itself.

My best suggestion is to potty train your cat. Yes, it can be done. You put a small plastic box that can fit in to the toilet seat and put a small amount of litter in the box. After a couple of weeks, you gradually decrease the amount of litter until the cat is going in the toilet completely. You can actually help him along by putting a bit of litter in to the water so that he is re-assured.

It is helpful if you can do this in a toilet that is not frequetly used, because it can he a hassle to move the box in and out, and also the cat will kick up a bit of sand which can make a gross mess.

If you cannot do this, it is best to pick up the box and put it up where the dogs cannot reach it. Use a covered box that fits tightly so there is not sand everywhere.

Good luck.

I have 2 cats and 3 dogs. I put the cat box in one room and use a kiddie gate screwed 5 inches up from the floor. The cats go under the gate with no problem but the dogs can't. Have done this for many, many years.

We keep our litter boxes in the basement and put a chain lock on the basement door so the cats can fit through but not the dogs. This also helps to give my cats an escape when my JRT mix wants to "play" with them.

that's the question of the century. All dogs love cat poop. I just keep the cat box in the tub in the spare bathroom. I've never been able to figure out how to stop it
good luck

A guinea pig is a good ides, but I don't know whether you'll be allowed to use a hutch-do you have a yard? Good indoors pets include mice, though if they escape they can be quite difficult to catch. If you want something clean, a hermit crab would be the best idea, and the kids can take it out and play with it so it's more ''personal'' than a fish.

If you have a laundry room, put it there. Or, if there is a place your dog isn't allowed to go, or never goes, put it in that spot.
