Waitresses and waitors have to report the tips from credit cards. There's a little room to wiggle with cash. They don't make a lot anyways so do cash for the tip.

Yes, it's true that they prefer to be tipped in cash. That way the restaurant owner can't hold any of it back from them like they can with a tip included on a credit or debit card.

We prefer cash at my steakhouse because we have to report whatever is on the credit cards. Some days if all of my tips are on credit cards I have to report more than I get to keep because we have to pay out 3% of our sales to tipshare for the bussers and hostesses. Cash is always better! But any tip is good!

I always tip them in cash because sometime the tips are put in a collective bowl and divided up among the waitresses whether they earned it or not.

Generally speaking, it doesn't matter. In most states, a waitress must claim 8.5% minimum of her tips so if credit card tips add up to more of that, you have to claim all those (they're claimed for you). But generally, cc tips don't add up to more than that on any given night so it usually won't matter. And technically, you're supposed to claim 100% of your earnings..

upscale resturants are now including a hidden 20% tip on your bill to begin with. I learned that the hard way when i gave a $15 tip and the waitress already had another 20%. That really ticked me off because they are sneaking around and getting more money when I already spent quite a bit to begin with.

Now days it is expected that you give 20% on the bill....
but I always leave a good tip for a deserving waitress.

the reason they prefer cash is that they're taxed on tips too... you can't lie about how much you made when it's printed on a credit card receipt - but when it's cash, you can lie about how much you received to reduce your tax liability, ultimately putting more of the cash in their pocket.

ya, wouldn't you? If you put the tip on a cc, 2 things happen. 1. They have to Wait til payday to get it an 2. They have to pay an income tax on it and can't fudge and claim less income. Tips earned must be reported, but that doesn't always happen accurately.
