I routinely pray before I go to bed (although once in a while I forget but I try not to) and even though it is a routine, I wouldn't say I was being mechanical about it. I also communicate with God throughout the day but I'm not sure if that is technically praying or not. I have felt like I have done it mechanically before I realized how much I needed God in my life.
If you are wanting to pray without being mechanical about it, try looking at your life and what you are most thankful for. Or if something wonderful has happened (such as landing a new job, meeting a new friend, a loved one healing, etc.) then that might help your prayers not seem so mechanical. My prayers are usually the same but they are in my own words, not pre-written prayers so if you are using already written prayers, try praying in your own words from your heart and mind and that might help.

I try not to pray mechanically. I pray before falling asleep and often throughout the day. I pray mainly for others needs and not mine.

Yeah prayer can be mechanical if it comes from the head rather than the heart.
