Well now, I'm a chess player .. which, could be viewed as a lot nastier than a boxer. If l was a boxer l could box you up and it might hurt, a few days later the pain would be less, a few months later the pain would be gone and the boxing a distant memory. However, if l used my pen as a sword l could cut deep immediately, a few days later that pain would still be there, a few months later that memory wouldn't be so distant and may play on your mind. Depending on the words used they could be with you for the rest of your life - l aim never to use any words that offend people but the capability is always there, so, the pen is much mightier than the sword. On the other hand the pen can also be better than any medicine so it's not all bleak!

I'm not sure a lot of people here got this ...

....swords make a stronger point ..and gets it across quicker

depends how you think ... the pen is outdated nowadays ...sorta like the UN

...but a person who uses the right words ... can sometimes hurt more as psychological scars heal much, much slower than physical ones..

The saying is a reflection on the after effects of such actions. For instance, if you use the fist, then the bruise may last a few days, but the wound inflicted by the brain may last a lifetime.

You could be right.

Try watching the film Grosse Point Blank with John Cusak where he plays a hitman.
He is given this pen as a gift and then kills another hitman by stabbing in the throat.

Class film, funny, action, a love story, it has it all.

I sure don't know about that boxer chess stuff but I do know uncle Buck stuck a pencil in his own eye once by accident and he saw stars for a week. They never did let him play with swords though.

the pen is mightier because most guys with a sword were created by a guy writing a story about him with a pen!

The sword can inflict mortal wounds and the pen emotional/mental, one is more permanent than the other so I would go for the sword any time of the day.

The sword leads to nothing but bodily harm and possible prison time. The pen is definately a more productive weapon. It leads to more creative and practical ways to solve problems and rarely is it considered physically harmful.

The saying is born out the assumption that diplomacy will solve any potential war situation by other, diplomatic means. By settling differences and putting your signature, using the pen, to the document produced.
