Beaujolais is a wine making region in France that is comprised of about 12 appellations, or sub regions. The Beaujolais region is 50,000+ acres and is planted with 98% Gamay, and 2% Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Beaujolais wines are typically light bodied, fruity, dry red wines with aromas like pear and banana. They are easy drinking and should be served slightly chilled.

Beaujolais Nouveau is the first output of the new vintage, and is released for sale worldwide on the third thursday of November without exception. (French law actually) The popularity of Beaujolais Nouveau has everything to do with marketing and hype, and pretty much nothing with the wines themselves.

Nouveaus are unremarkable wines. They are made very rapidly, and are mere babes in the wood when they are released for sale. They are dilute and overly light: their only real purpose is to give an indication of what the vintage will be like with proper aging.

People will tell you that the Nouveaus should be drunk almost the second you get the bottle home, but in actuality they are the better for waiting at least until the Christmas holidays. Most Beaujolais should be drunk within two years, however the higher quality vintages can last to ten years.
