Not only but cramming for an exam can cause mental block during the test.
Best to study all along the quarter of semester. Then study for test a little at a time. i.e. take plenty of breaks while studying to clear mind. Don't study too long at one sitting.
What I did when studying for exam when in college was start studying for it a week by reviewing everything we'd covered through semester doing a little a night never trying to cram it all in; in one night. Then night before exams I won't crack a book. I'd keep my mind off the exams bying doing something else like going out to eat, movies, playing ball etc. That way I would not be all nerved up during the exam. I would be rested and my mind would be clear.

Yes, you probably have driven your brain into overdrive studying so much and now it is interferring with your sleep. Hopefully you are now done studying because its Christmas break from school and you can relax.
