It is what large companies are doing to encourage brand loyalty for a lifetime.
By making and marketing heavily consumer goods towards children and because children are very impressionable they associate very quickly with brand names.
Some kids cant remember the whole alphabet but they can recognise many corporate logos.
This is a form of grooming for future sales.
E.G. Kids go to McDonalds for happy meal, get toy with meal, kid happy, kid associates McDonalds with happiness and good memories, kid grows up and keeps going to McDonalds because of the happy memories.
Many companies have recognised that children are a huge percentage of the population and they can have a lot of influence when it comes to spending the dough in a particular direction.
E.G 2 Kid wants latest must have toy/ sweet/ fizzy drink etc, parents object in store, kid throws tantrums and makes scene until parents buys object of desire.
Companies know this so they create marketing specifically aimed at children.

It's all about generating brand loyalty and recognition from an early age as several of my fine Answers colleagues have already remarked. Its also about generating parent and peer pressure. But it is mostly about attacking the most impressionable market demographic to ensure a generation of capitalists (ohhhh theres that scary word) and consumers for the future to ensure brand survival. It's child abuse in its mildest form.
