why are pomegranates called pomegranates?

pome means an apple in french, like other word from french many food called after french word. in Hebrew we call an orange gold apple- tapuz. so many word mixes when shifting from other countries and pomegranate too.

Because if we called them pears, we'd buy the wrong thing a the store!
