I'm writing an essay on a novel and only need to cite the novel in question. When I list my works cited at the end of the essay, can I put the list at the bottom of my last page (which only contains about eight lines of text) instead of on a new page? I don't want to waste an entire sheet of paper for two lines of typing.

No, it's best to give it its own page, even if it's only one text.

It really depends on what your teacher wants. Some high school teachers may be lenient on that note; but most college professors will want the paper done professionally, separate works cited page included. It is an annoying waste of paper, but it's what the intellectuals who wrote the MLA handbook want.

If you're using MLA format, the works cited page should always be a separate page.

Do it on a new page.

It depends most on what your instructor told you. Sometimes you can include the information as part of the title or within the first paragraph.

Unless you are told differently by your instructor, I'd use a separate page.
