I SO agree with you! They aren't cute, they are like noisy rats on a leash! They can't even bark without their whole bodies shaking.

Well, I like Chihuahuas because of the small size and many more reasons, but that is my opinion. My sister has a friend with a Chihuahua that isn't spoiled. Though I do agree that people spoil there Chihuahuas. This summer, I was at a pool and somebody had brought there Chihuahua. They carried it around but it was for a reason: the Chihuahua had a brocken leg. The Chihuahua had a cast, I don't blame the owner for that, but had people sign it!

I happen to own a chihuahua and I love him more than anything. They aren't all "yappy little rats" and I take offense at that comment. If they're treated like a dog and not a baby, they are perfectly sweet natured dogs and not yappy at all. It shows you don't know much about dogs if you think these characteristics are indicative of the dog and not the owner. Unfortunately, the smaller dogs have become more like accessories to some, which is unfortunate. Your hatred is displaced...it's the owners fault, not the dogs. Your comment is about as stupid as saying all pitbulls are killers.

I am a dog person and my favorate breed is the golden retriever. *HOWEVER*, I now own two chihuahuas. So, why do I like them? In reality, if you DON'T spoil them or treat them entirely different, they are just a dog and have the same pros and cons roughly. I've taught mine the basics of sit, lay down, stay, come, etc. They do tend to bark, but in fact after having them over a year, it's very very little and they will quiet down once instructed. i agree if you spoil them they will suck hardcore.

i do jokingly call the smaller of my two "little rat dog" at times. he doesn't seem to care =)

Obviously most of the people who answered don't own chihuahuas. I love my little dogs because they are always going to be puppies. They are tenacious and spirited and lively and fun. I don't carry my dog around in public or in a purse. Just because you see like 2 celebrities carrying around a dog doesn't mean that is how everyone is with their dog.

Alot of people could find fault with bigger breeds too. They bark LOUD. They have gigantic-bigger than human- crap. They need gigantic quantities of food-so more expensive. Big dogs don't live as long as little dogs. Many apartments won't accept big dogs. It is mean and cruel to have a big dog and not give it adequate space to run in. To my tiny pups, my backyard is a gigantic playground. They are easy to clean up after, cheap to feed, they always stay small and manageable. You have NEVER heard of a little dog killing or hurting someone seriously...I could go on and on.

i find it funny when people get all mad when someone talks smack about there chihuahua. they are all like my little baby would never do that or it is a perfect little angel. my friend has one and it is a demon dog. i have seen that thing attack and bite more people than any big dog. it never stops barking and thinks the world owes it everything. like people say everyone their own but all i know is if one ever tried to bite me or my family the last thing it would see is the bottom of my boot! anyways just leave the guy alone just becouse he does not like something you like does not mean you can be all attacking over it. it is people like you guys who cry and whine who pis me off you think attacking someone and calling them names is going to make them want to get to know the chihuahua any more? i think not if anything it just proves that his opinion is right and his dislike for them will continue. how about building on common believes about dogs. that way people dont get all defensive!

I think people like them for many reasons..
One being little usually = cute and cute most often = desirable, since they stay "little" they tend to say "cute"

Could be that they want or need to be close to an animal and a chi is small enough to handle, even if out of control/angry/hurting.

Also, low maintence comes to mind. Smaller dog-amal less of everything.

Also, I think Chis bark so much because they're so small. They don't have much to defend with so they make a huge vocal presence. A compensation of sorta... Anyone understand dog psychology enough to confirm that suspicion?

They are basically for a lazy owner. They can receive their exercise without having the owner to even raise a finger. Which is the reason why so many of them are yappy and loud, for they don't get the attention and interaction that the more disciplined, larger breeds MAY receive.

But then again not all chihuahua owners are like this.

Having a trained dog isn’t the same as having a balanced dog, but if your dog knows a few basic commands, it can be helpful when tackling problem behaviors — existing ones or those that may develop in the future. Learn here https://tr.im/8mL4l

So where do you start with dog obedience training? You could take a class, but it’s not necessary; you can do it yourself. In fact, with the right attitude, it can be fun for both you and your dog!
Step 1 : Sit
This is one of the easiest dog obedience commands to teach, so it’s a good one to start with.
• Hold a treat close to your dog’s nose.
• Move your hand up, allowing his head to follow the treat and causing his bottom to lower.
• Once he’s in sitting position, say “Sit,” give him the treat, and share affection.
Repeat this sequence a few times every day until your dog has it mastered. Then ask your dog to sit before mealtime, when leaving for walks, and during other situations where you’d like him calm and seated.
Step 2 : Come
This command can help keep a dog out of trouble, bringing him back to you if you lose grip on the leash or accidentally leave the front door open.
• Put a leash and collar on your dog.
• Go down to his level and say, “Come,” while gently pulling on the leash.
• When he gets to you, reward him with affection and a treat.
Once he’s mastered it with the leash, remove it — and practice the command in a safe, enclosed area.
Step 3 : Down
This can be one of the more difficult commands in dog obedience training. Why? Because the position is a submissive posture. You can help by keeping training positive and relaxed, particularly with fearful or anxious dogs.
• Find a particularly good smelling treat, and hold it in your closed fist.
• Hold your hand up to your dog’s snout. When he sniffs it, move your hand to the floor, so he follows.
• Then slide your hand along the ground in front of him to encourage his body to follow his head.
• Once he’s in the down position, say “Down,” give him the treat, and share affection.
Repeat it every day. If your dog tries to sit up or lunges toward your hand, say “No” and take your hand away. Don’t push him into a down position, and encourage every step your dog takes toward the right position. After all, he’s working hard to figure it out!

If you don't own one, don't speak. You see Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, etc. with Chihuahuas and SOME people may get one because the celebrities have one. I on the other hand got my first chihuahua before Paris Hilton became as famous as she is now. Chihuahuas are the perfect little companions. I have 3 of them and they are so loving. They are very "codependent" dogs and are very devoted to their family; however, most don't get along with people other than their own family. I do agree that it would be hard for someone to understand if they've never owned one because you can't get close to them unless you are constantly with them. They are not the most social little things. So to answer your question, they are not just the little yappers that people think they are. And I do agree it depends on how they are raised. Anyways, nobody would know why they are so great if they don't own one or have the chance to become close to one.
