I used 5/8 of a pound per person at a benefit supper as my formula and it worked out pretty close. We figured on serving 300 persons and ended up with about 325. They cleaned out 175 -180 lbs of meatballs. We ran out right toward the end of the supper.
Knowing the way my family eats...I think this formula would work for us (and your family) as well. This would work out to about 12-13 lbs for your family. I hope this helps.

Well, you would usually make a half pound of meat per person, but if they are big eaters, You may want to make one pound of meat per person, but it would also depend on what other foods you will be having. If you have a lot of sides, then a half of a pound per person should be enough. Just remember that it is better to have more than enough, than not enough.

The amount of uncooked meat you’ll actually need per person depends on the cut.
* Boneless meat (ground meat, stew meat, boneless roasts or chops)—1/4 to 1/3 pound per serving.
* Bone-in meat (steaks, chops, chicken pieces)—1/3 to 1/2 pound per serving.
* Bony meat (ribs)—3/4 to 1 pound per serving
So for 20 people you need 5 - 7 lbs. of meatloaf.

1/8 of a pound you need to allow for "shrinkage" as the grease comes out of the meat

Buy 10 pounds. You might have some left over, but it's better to have too many than too few.
