You're right, a big motivating factor when it comes to faith and belief is our compulsion to ease our anxiety over mortality. In that sense, I suppose people would be MORE inclined to accept Scientology which teaches that our basic "being" is "the Thetan", and "Thetans" are immortal. They may reside in many physical forms, but the "Thetan" is never completely "killed", so to speak.

I do not believe because it was written. I beleive because I saw a sign. I don't believe in any holy texts or books. I figured out what I thought would be a logical way to create the earth/souls/ etc. and found that one religion had all the same thoughts as me.
I do not think faith stems from fear of death. It stems from the fear that our lives are meaningless. If there is nothing after this world and this life, what was the point in living it? And indeed my faith offers an answer for that too. But not all people have this fear.

What is the nature of religion....?
What is the nature of Faith...?
The true nature of a religion which requires Faith is to serve itself. For to have Faith by definition is to 'believe' a truth is actually true, whereas a truth should be self evident as such. If Faith is required then the 'Truth' is not self evident.
If a religion was to advocate self awareness through concentrated effort in searching for a truth's true nature, then that religion would be redundant. This is why religions do not advocate this method of realisation. Therefore a religions true nature is self preservation through the method of Faith and the writing of Dogma only through Faith in that Dogma will the righteous be 'Saved' and so making it self serving.
This is the nature of Faith and Religion.
Faith is not the fear of death. Faith is held because of a fear of failing and therefore being disqualified in the race to reach heaven. However that said Faith is still based on Fear.

Is not a question of faith. Is a question of awareness. Not because it was written in a book but because you know. Who you are? Are you a brain, a computer, an animal? Or are you an inmortal spiritual being? Evidence? Scientist can't explain how you think! They have even given up in investigating this area. Man is far more intelligent than any computer and it has individuality and creativity. But the brain is far inferior than any computer. You can fit a thousand transistor in a brain cell. And transistors don't need food, oxygen and don't produce waist. Also brain cell are a poor conductor of electricity. Under modern theories the hard drive of the brain would be full in 2 months use. So the thinking unit of man can't be the brain!!!! You are a inmortal spiritual being. Mind over matter not matter over mind. Believe in your soul and you can't lose. Believe that you are a brain and you allready lost.
Faith is knowing not because it is in a book, you just know.
P.S. I'm not afraid of death. I don't believe in death. I'm a spirit not a body.

there is a lot more to faith than thinking about the afterlife.
Faith can be a person having faith there will be a convenient parking place, a relative will call on their birthday or Christmas, They will have more or less rain this year than the year before.
I rely on faith many times every day!

The alternative (to there being some kind of life after death) seems to me even more ridiculous.
The idea that in an infinite universe we popped out of nowhere, are going to live 75 years, and then go back to nowhere seems ridiculous to me.
But hey, if that makes sense to you...

Humans want the universe to be human. Pigs want the universe to be pig-like, and humans what the universe to be human. Therefore we got a God who is really human, if you read Genesis you will find out how human he is: ego problems, jealousy, anger, remorse, disgust, impatience...
Faith is the human desire for a human universe. But the universe was in existence long before humans and is not the slightest bit human. But do not be alarmed, you can still sing "Jesus Loves Me" to your children.

Religion has a lot to do with afterlife but it's also about explaining who things got started, ethics, etc. As for scientology, that's not really a religion.
