All digital pictures are made up of dots. These dots are called Picture Elements which has been abbreviated to Pixels. If a picture was made from a few large dots it would be poor quality and difficult to see fine detail. The more dots in general the better the quality of the picture.

In the early days digital pictures were 640 pixels wide by 480 pixels high. Multiply this and you see there were slightly under half a million pixels.

Nowadays we have millions of pixels. The correct prefix for million is 'mega' so we have megapixels or millions of picture elements. Your camera has 8 100 000 picture elements or dots.

8.1 Megapixels is the size of the sensor that captures the image.

In short and not to get too technical, there is 8 million photo sesitive cells on the sensor. Each capture the light that hits them and turns it into digital data.
