Chilled strawberry soup served in martini glasses and garnished with chocolate! Check out www.epicurious.com

You could also blend vanilla ice cream with a little milk and some bits of chocolate and crushed candy cane and serve holiday "soup" that's closer to being a milk shake.

Your family sounds like fun!

if it is a light soup, bring a rich desert like a chocolate mousse or chocolate lava cakes(rich decadent cake, yummy gooey stuff inside my mouth is watering talking about it)
if it is a rich cream soup, bring a light but tasty dessert
a trifle is always a showstopper very little effort but very
beautiful results
Good standbys are: pies, cakes, bread pudding (try a chocolate croissant bread pudding)
also i recommend sara moulton's french apple tart
really quite easy and so beautiful

As soup is usually quite light I would be tempted t do a traditional Christmas pudding. There are some other pudding ideas here : http://www.recipesforvegans.co.uk/desserts.html

sweet potatoe pie or pumpkin pie. You can make pumpkin pie just by substituting it into a sweet potato pie recipe. http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_24965,00.html
This is a REALLY good recipe from Food Network's Alton Brown.
