Catholic Mass. Our 5 year old falls asleep about once a month. Am I obligated to wake him up?

Sure it's okay.

Nope, you don't have to wake him up.

My aunt's Mother Superior of an Ursuline convent in Kansas. When we go visit her, of course the little ones fall asleep during Mass. The only time you're obligated to correct them is if they're being disruptive. Sleeping is fine, as long as he's not snoring loudly or anything! ; )

Other than that, once he hits 8 or 9 and starting catechism and getting closer to his confirmation, then a priest would frown on him sleeping. By then they're old enough to participate, and he'll need to pay attention to understand everything that's going on.

'Til then, let him sleep!

I don't think there is anything wrong with letting him fall asleep. YOu may want to try to keep him awake with something that will occupy his time, like a coloring book, but I don't think you'll be encouraging any bad habits if he ends up asleep during Mass.

Try sitting near the front pew so he can see what is going on. Make sure that you sing to him when everyone is singing. Tell him what is going on at Mass. The priest is praying prayers that go right over his head, so you might want to explain to him what the priest is saying and doing.

if he still falls asleep, it is ok.

I think once a month is fine but break the habit before he is 7 years old.

P.S. I am the sister of 5 siblings (four are younger)and catholic too!

I'd be glad he's asleep and not being noisy. Sometimes it's harder to keep them occupied. At 5 it's awful hard to sit through mass, I wouldn't worry about it.

Let him fall asleep, atleast he is quiet. Plus he is only 5.

He is only five years old and needs his sleep, it's not like he's going to remember any of this anyways... if he was older though, i would definately wake him up

Heh, that's adorable. I used to do that when I was younger. Don't sweat it, the kid's only five. If he continues to do this though throughout teens or something, then that's a problem. For now it's just.. cute =)

No, you're under no obligation to wake him up. I'm sure God would approve-he rested on Sunday too ;-)

That is cute. Dont worry about it, he is only five. He thinks this stuff "is stupid or boring" but dont worry. Let him sleep as long as he doesnt snore ;) Now it is a different story when he becomes a teenage :)
