I have a child who has ALOT of problems!! When i say ALOT , thats what I mean,...ANGER , Impulsiveness, hyperactivity, extremes(no inbetween @ all ...he is either ERATIC or ESTATIC)! When he was young they thought it was ADHD, now they say Bipolar, he has been severly abused when he was younger and also has the diagnosis of Post traumatic Stress disorder. Sometimes I wonder if ANYONE knows what to do to help him!!!! He has been on so many different med's is UNREAL!!!!! Nothing seems to work, I am at the stage of wanting him De-Toxed off all of it!!
Has Anyone else out there been in these shoes???
I'm so use to more clear cut diagnosis

Has anyone suggested Reactive Attachment Disorder? Children who are severely abused or traumatized when they are young sometimes develop this. They feel that since when they were helpless children they were hurt or neglected, they must be in control at all times in order to avoid being hurt again. (Not consciously of course!) It manifests in different ways for different kids... inlcuding ways very similar to both bipolar and ADHD. Many meds don't seem to work for kids with RAD because their symptoms aren't due to their brain chemicals, the symptoms are due to how they've learned to protect themselves. Certain theraists are trained to work with kids with these issues and can slowly help them learn to reprogram themselves. I would avoid "rebirthing" or other therapies such as that, where heavy restraint and adult control is used. One therapy method, http://www.theraplay.org/, seems to be very good with kids with RAD or ANY sort of severe behavior problems! Check it out! Hope this helped!

Sounds like it could be either ADHD or Bipolar to me. Bipolar is a stress disorder, Post traumatic stress could cause a Bipolar disorder, Side effects of being bipolar might include these mood swings and stuff, when your bipolar your confused and have mixed emotions. It also sounds like he 'could' have ADHD. Just take him to a shrink to see if a shrink could sink into him in a way the meds can't. He might need someone to talk about this ya know?

I am ADHD, and that sounds like me. I thought I was Bipolar until my mother told me she and everyone in her familiy had ADHD, so i got it genetically. I have a lot of mood swings, and sometimes I'm hyper, sometimes I'm calm, but i'm usually calm.

My girlfriend has had problems with ADD and being Bipolar, off and on. the meds, ditch them, they'll create more problems which will "need" more meds. get him counseling, management for his anger and impulses, get him to talk. meds dampen, but don't always fix, the problem
