I have severe scoliosis and i had to have 2 major operations in 2005 bc my spine specialist dr. said if i didn't i would end up in a wheelchair. Well, he told me from the get go that he couldn't fix me 100% but that he could fix me 80%..............i had a 46 degree curve, i couldn't even stand up straight, i leaned way over to one side. THE first surgery in Feb. he put in what's called the Blackstone Hardware.............i didn't wear my brace like i was suppose to and it started coming apart. So then in Aug. i had to have another surgery where he took it out and fused my lumber. Needless to say it DID work to some degree(i can at least stand up straight) but my right side still bulges and i lost 2 inches in height. Well, then i was doing physical therapy for my back when my left hip started hurting bad and my right knee blew up. I ended up having to have minor surgery in my r knee to fix torn ligaments (meniscus) so that i can have a total hip replacement??????????? So that is what i'm waiting on now. I think this may have all happened bc i am SOOOO out of whack and jacked up...............so what i'm saying is i would do anything i can before i have surgery UNLESS it's absolutely necessary. I use to have bad sciatic nerve pain but i don't have it anymore.......................but it IS a risky surgery, i COULD have been paralyzed but through the grace of GOD i am ok...........i still have to take pain meds but right now i can hardly walk bc of my hip........................good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do the potential benefits out-weigh the risks associated with the surgery? If so, then why not take that chance to be better?

only you can decide that.if you are in a lot of chronic pain, you may want to go ahead.the surgeon will take the greatest care, but you should be aware that there are risks associated with this type of surgery.
