I just started running about 2 weeks ago. I can go about 1/4 to a 1/2 mile and I absolutely have to stop because of being so out of breath. My muscles tense up so bad that it hurts across my shoulders and in my chest. How long does it take to get in runners shape?

It sounds like as mentioned already you are running to fast. You want to go at a slower pace, not sprint. It takes months to years to be able to run marathon distances. If you jog instead of full speed running you will be able to run farther. If you continue to experience the pains, you should consult your doctor.

Maybe you are running to fast for your ability. try a run/walk program to start with and slowly work up. Runners World has a website that has a beginner runners program and a lots of information on running. start out slow and work up. Hope that helps.

you could be pushing yourself too hard or you could have asthma... try going to your doctor and ask them if you'd need an albuterol inhaler for when you run
