My girlfriend and I have had a female Chihuahua puppy for two weeks now. The puppy is very smart and has adapted to life with us well, She is actually my first dog and I am very protective of her. At night we have found out that it is much easier to leave her in the bathroom at night because it includes her bed w/ blanket, water and food bowls nearby and her training pad and litter box. She seems pretty set in there, but sometimes at night she whines for a couple of minutes then goes to sleep. We occasionally check up on her during the night and she is either still asleep or just in her bed chillin. What bothers me is that we turn the light off when she is in there, so is she ok? Is it ok to leave a puppy in a dark room at night? I don't want to do anything to her that might traumatize her.

it's perfectly okay......dogs have excellent night vision. The minimum threshold of light dogs require for vision is about five or six times lower than that of humans. So your dog won't be stumbling around in the dark if you don't leave a light on for him. The retinas of dogs are dominated by rods, allowing them to see very well with very little light.

so long as there is nothing she should be afraid of(sharp objects, falling in the toilet etc) there is no problem with turning off the light. IN fact, if you do it every night she will one day learn that turning off the light means bed time. A very useful thing if you are visiting other people or travelling or just need to get her out of the way for a little bit.

LOL Dogs are not scared of the dark. If you left the light on she might get up and wander around more and use the bathroom more. She is okay with the light off. I have lots of experience with Chihuahuas. Been raising them for 8+ yr and owned them for over 30.

I have had five dogs, none of which have been left in total darkness. I have always left a night light for them. Night lights are very subdued lighting, just enough to let the dog see their way, but not enough to disturb them.

She's probably all right, since she is curling up to sleep most times. But if it will make you feel better, you could put a little night light in there- one of the photo-sensitive ones.

If she's sleeping through the night, then yes, it's fine to leave the light off. If she was traumatized, she probably wouldn't be sleeping anymore.

If you are worried about her, just leave a night light on.

Don't do anything about it. She is going to whine, thats normal. As long as she is safe, well fed, she will eventually calm down. Don't give in. Consistency is key.
