So what ONE religion would you be part of?

Why don't you make a list of churches that didn't permit slavery. You will have a pretty short list, and guess what the LDS church won't be there. Is your church?

The Church supported civil rights in the 1960s. Did your church?

I was concerned about racism in the Church before I joined. Guess what. The first member that visited with the missionaries happen to be black. My first ward was like the United Nations. My former bishop has a black son-in-law. The past is the past.

If you are Atheist, then what explanation will suit you? First of all, Mormons never excluded blacks from joining. It was only the priesthood that was restricted. In our faith, a person who holds the preisthoid serves without pay. If it were given in the beginning, would we then be accused of making slaves of them under the guise of a "priesthood" calling? The truth is if a person, such as yourself, wants to find reasons to hate, they surely can come up with something. Mormons have NOT mistreated blacks. It's completely against our faith to enslave another human. If we were truly racist and full of hate towards the black race, why were we willing to take on so much persecution from the state of Missouri over the slavery issue? The missourians wanted the Mormons out of their state because they knew that Mormons would vote as a block and slavery would not be made legal in that state. Not one single Mormon has burnt the cross of our Jesus on the lawn of a black person. The priesthood was restricted from a particular lineage of people. Baptism was restricted in Christ's day to my lineage (gentile) until later when it was revealed to Peter that the time was right. I'm not at all resentful. I understand some of the reasons but it would be completely useless to explain them to someone who denies that there is a God. Right? Can you be happy knowing that despite a few words, all actions have been good and not abusive? If we are racist, why aren't we going after blacks to hurt them? Why didn't we ever? It's because our Jesus won't allow it. He didn't allow his disciples to abuse the Gentiles either. Just because baptism was restricted from the Gentiles and priesthood from blacks did not mean that abuse of either would be justified or tolerated. It's not an insensitive question. Just an uninformed slanted one. No big deal.

As others have stated, there were many African American members of the church. In fact, Joseph Smith was one of the most outspoken individuals against slavery and had it as part of his platform when he ran for president. The only thing they weren't allowed was the Priesthood, and there is no real explanation as to why; although there have been many times when God only gave his authority to certain groups. I always wondered about this, but in the end it is pretty insignificant. The Mormons are amazing in how they support anyone whether or their faith or not and provide so much assistance to their communities. They are definitely not racists.

Many African people were already members of the church. They were never banned, but they were not allowed to hold the priesthood. That may sound racist, but at first only the Jews and ONLY the jews were allowed into the church, then Christ said to go convert the gentiles (thats the rest of us) so there was a time when the normal white guys were not allowed in the church too.
Any negative comments on the Mormon church are by people who are Anti-Mormon. 'Normal' people think Mormons are wonderful people, or dont care either way. It is only the 'anti-' people that are so bitter.

If you really checked the Mormon history you would find that there were numorous members that were African-American since Joseph Smith's time. They just could not hold the Priesthood in the church until the early 1970's. After that ALL male members were able to hold the Priesthood no matter what color or nationality they were.

African Americans could always be in the Mormon religion.

I wonder if during the days of slavery and segregation in the south if African Americans were allowed in the Baptist churches.

The Book of Mormon talks about the people of black skin being cursed. Don't worry about it though. If you aren't white, 3 Nephi teaches that if you TRULY repent, your skin will turn white.

(I am not a Mormon and I don't believe that rubbish that I just typed above.) God has created us with the skin color we have and there is no curse attached to skin color.
If you want a good treatment of this, look at "Revelations of Convenience" by Floyd McElveen.
