You can only save so so many presets on FM1, then you press FM2 and you can save some more. The number of presets you can save may vary from car to car though.

If you look at your radio, you'll notice that you only have 6 buttons. This is why you are allowed 6 presets on FM1 and 6 presets on FM2. It saves space on the radio instead of having 12 buttons on the front for preset stations.

The FM1/FM2 is for broader number of preset station memory.

if you have 2 drivers with different tastes in music you can both preset the stations you want without having to scan the stations.

They do that to allow you to set more stations. 6 stations typically on fm-1 and 6 stations on fm-2
