Nope, no such thing as a special kind of dog, they are all fine. However, if the puppy is an aggressive breed (pit-bull, chow, Rottweiler) may turn on the cat when it gets older. I have always had dogs & cats in the same house. A cat & puppy will get along much better than a dog & kitten (unless the dog already has cats in its home). The cat will quicky teach a puppy the proper etiquette and who is the true owner of the house! They puppy may get it's nose bloodied in the process, but no permanent harm will be done. It is a good idea not to interfere when the cat is training the puppy, or the cat may become resentful of the puppy. In the end they will probably end up being best friends.

They should be fine. The cat will let the puppy know the pecking order with a few good swats.
My brother & sister-in-law had a cat for three years before they got their dog (a pup at the time). The cat let the dog know in no uncertain terms that it would NOT be mauled. Today the two get along fine & even play together. The dog gets a little obcessive about it, but when the cat it done, she swats at him & that's it...
Just don't turn the two loose together & leave the house. You might come home to A LOT of broken stuff....
You can also get a hold of a rescue shelter & adopt a dog that is use to cats & gets along with them.
ALWAYS CHECK YOUR ANIMAL SHELTERS BEFORE buying a dog or puppy from a breeder & NEVER EVER BUY A PUPPY OR KITTEN FROM A PET SHOP!!!!

my grandmother had the same problem she had dog and a cat so she figured out that if you give the dog a little more attention that the dog wouldn't bother the cat. One thing you have to know about that approach is that you can't make the cat feel unloved because that won't work and could result in your cat running away. If you have multiple people around, the dog will want a few more than the cat. If the cat has more the dog will probably try to come and make the cat leave or snag a few people. Hope you can get a dog.

I've had cats most of my life and have added dogs to the mix several times. What usually happens is the cat hides for MONTHS and will slowly get more brave and start coming out again. Get a puppy so he'll grow up with the cat and learn his place while still little and less able to hurt the cat. I now have 1 cat and 2 labs. One of the labs is fascinated with the cat, stares at him constantly and wants to lick him to death. The cat eventually gets tired of it and gives the dog a good smack and that's the end. Keep the dog crated when you're not home so it can't hurt the cat while unsupervised.

Most dogs can be trained not to disturb cats, especially if you get the dogs while they're puppies. In fact, I've known a few cats who would help train puppies in matters of feline relations. You might want to watch the cat a while and make sure she doesn't hurt the pup, but otherwise it shouldn't be a real problem.
Good luck!

if you get a puppy chances are they will learn to co-mingle. The cat will probably tell the dog to back off and that will be that.
it also depends on what size of dog you are looking at. I wouldnt leave the cat alone with a chihuahua puppy for instance.
Most of the time they can live very happily together. Take him to obedience, just in case anything happens, you can be sure he'll listen to you.

Well just train the puppy to like cats. Don't let the puppy stay in front of the T.V and watch dogs beat up cats.

Doesn't the puppy, or the cat have to have a problem with each other before you start freaking out about this? Your new puppy or cat might get along quite nicely. there doesn't always have to be a rivalry between the two.Best of luck and i hope u get ur puppy

I would suggest getting a pooch from the humane society that had been in a multi-pet house before. If thats not possible I would say this, keep them seperated when you are not home like in seperate rooms and when you are home introduce the to eachother slowly and just supervise them that way they get used to eachother and nobody gets hurt. You never know how a pet will react to a new one until you try. Good Luck!
