•Look for a camera from Brands that everyone has heard of such as:
-Samsung
-Sony
-hp
-Canon
The kinds of brands noone has heard of are usally cheap.
•Also, it is very convenient to have a big screen on the back. It allows you to see more details in your pics, so you an trash them if you like, to save more room in your camera.
•Mega-pixels help alot, if you have 5 or 6 of 'em. It will allow the pics to turn out better and brighter. with 3-4, however, the printing quality will be not as good.
•Another great feature on some digital cameras is being able to take videos. Esspesially on trips you want to remember funny or weird thing that happend that is about 1 min long.
• I have a Samsung L60 and it is perfect. Big screen, 6 mega-pixels, and it can capture videos.
• When getting a camera, you should get a case for it. That way, your camera wont get damaged, or stolen, but remember to put your name on it just incase it does get lost.
•MEMORY CARDS!!! you will need to get one. If you only want 12 pictures on your camera, then dont buy one. If u want a ton of pics, get cards!
•Even though cameras anywhere arent cheap, try looking at Target. I found mine there. Go for about $200-$300 looking for a camera.
Hope my skills helped you. good luck Kayla! Merry Christmas!

All of the major brands have their fans, and I have no doubt that they are all good cameras. The only camera available at the moment that I would stay away from is the Fuji S9500. I bought one and the photos are just not sharp and clear.
Take your time looking, they are getting better and cheaper as time goes by.
Optical zoom is the most important thing, get the most you can for your money.
Digital zoom is a complete waste of time, do not consider this as a factor when buying a camera. Once you have bought a camera, turn digital zoom off.
Get the most megapixels you can for your money.
As a very rough rule of thumb when comparing your final choices in camera, take the number of megapixels and multiply that by the amount of optical zoom. Buy the camera with the highest number.
Try to avoid a camera that uses two 'AA' batteries (except perhaps the Kodaks that can use the CR3 Lithium ion Battery Pack). Get a camera that either uses four, or one with its own dedicated Lithium Ion battery pack. (If you want to keep it for a long time, check the price and availability of replacement batteries. perhaps ebay?)

You want something with at least 4 megapixels, but I'd go for 5-6 megapixels. A 3x optical zoom is pretty standard too and is nice for taking everyday pictures. One that comes with a rechargeable battery is best too, or else you'll end up spending a lot of money in batteries to keep it going.

"but itas a christmas gift?"
Huh?
Look for one with a spell-checker.
The things you need to look for depends on who and what it is for.
You already asked what brand in another question.
Actually, you posted almost this exact same question one minute apart. How can you type so fast? Are you a spambot?
Why don't you wait for that question or 1 of the other 3 similar questions to be answered first?

I like a bigger screen. I just bought a Canon SD630 and absolutely love the 3" screen. Look for one which is thin and light, that will make your life much easier.
