it's called food aggression.
He feels the need to protect his food at all costs. At the time he should have been scolded for it. Don't let him get away with it in the future.
one great way to work on it is to use the "take it, leave it "command with treats, and just start feeding him his kibble from your hand, or to sit by his dish when he eats. Depending on the dog though, there are many different ways of dealing with this problem.

when my niece was about 3-4 she went to GIVE the dog a bone ( chow chow) and he growled as he basically sucked her hand and part of her arm in his mouth and he started to bit down...I immediately grabbed the top and bottom jaw of the dog and YANKED them wide open and pulled her little hand out and then picked the dog up but the neck and threw it about 5 feet, and yell go lay down, niece was OK, dog got yelled at, he NEVER was mean to her ever again..never.
if you do not address the situation right then and there, it could continue, and even get worse, and if the dog does seem to be having more issues, you may need to think about putting him down. he would be of no use to any one if he can not be trusted..YES even with his food...my niece from that day on could take food right out of his mouth and give it back and the dog would just sit there and wait for her...
no dog of mine would ever growl, never mind bite..it would not make it to the next meal...and that includes the work dogs too, ones trained for security ....
good luck

Did he actually bite you or just tooth you? I was always taught NEVER ever try to take food away from an animal. yes, he's a pet but an animal first. Animals do not think or reason like humans. Unless he has been trained to always let you interfere with his feeding, the animal only acted normal. You were out of line. Did you intend to eat his treat? why else would you try to take it. That is what your dog thought.

That's not good. You shoudl try to find a local dog trainer, so they can fix the problem. For now, keep the treats out of reach, and only give him small enough amounts that he doesn't have to drop some pieces while eating. Start to give him more praise than treats. Good Luck!

Well let that be a lesson learned the hard way. NEVER try to take food away from a dog. OR you will get bitten. Cats will do the same thing.
Next time don't give a treat if you don't plan to let him eat it. Does he go for your hand or growl if you touch his food bowl while he's eating? He may be aggressive when it comes to food.
I have one dog that will let me take steak out of her mouth, but my other dog would take my hand off if I even suggested doing that.

It's a natural instinct for an animal to guard its food. Don't make any quick grabs for his food in the future.

sounds like he might think he's the dominate dog, I might want to work on that. Read the book "the Dog whisperer" It will help you with this problem and make sure it will never happen again.

Sometimes dogs are just protective like that. It might just be instincts. It's not that he's all of a sudden gonna be grumpy, he just decided that it was his treat and he didn't want you to have it.

did he draw blood? i tell you what, if my dog ever bit me out of aggression it would be on a strict watch and if the aggression continued it would be put down, if i didn't do it immediately! if it ever bit my child it would have been shot in my back yard right then! you need to address this asap and remind your dog who is alpha!
