from the above replies,
Bottomline: Limewire is not safe. Unless you know exactly what you're doing and you can recognize threats , take effective precautions and measures, do not use Limewire or any other p2p programs for that matter.

Antivirus programs can protect but are not a 100% solution. Most Malware are intoduced into p2p systems as they replicate the fastest due to sheer amount of users on the network , more than 90% of whom are not tech savvy enough to detect threats. Newer threats can pass detection from Anti-virus and other scanners unless updated and sometimes require a full system-wide scan before they can be uprooted. Even so, many threats still remain until the point your Scanner manufacturers release an update. By then it may be too late as you may loose personal information, files etc.

If you really need to use the p2p programs buy a used working PC and keep it dedicated for the purpose of p2p and equip it with as many protection programs as you can in-case you may copy files that could be potentially malware/viruses. You do not need high-end systems for this purpose. A $100 investment max would suffice.

YES any open sharing medias such as limewire, bearshare, morpheus and all that has viruses, spyware, and other bad components. These are sharing files which means that if other people has this file on there computer that they downloaded from limewire you are basically downloading from them and they probably more likely are going to have a virus or spyware.

In a manner of speaking, yes. Limewire itself doesn't produce and isn't itself a virus. However, it allows you the ability to download files. These files may be infected or may be viruses themselves. Download with caution.

As with ANY peer to peer program, you open your computer up to someone else. And I have seen many so called programs available from these that are nothing more than a Virus. In effect, the program is not a virus, but allows you to get them. Just remember this, If you search for a file, and it is really small, it most likely is a virus.

It may some times allow viruses. Better to be on safeside. You may be having a virus or spyware installed on your PC. You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at

If the files are not large, they are usually corrupted (less than a meg for programs, songs less so). My virus protection usually picks them up when I go to open the file though.
