I am being flown to the States this week for medical treatment not available here in Germany and was wondering if anyone else had ever been in this situation? We were told by our hospital here that we would be paying for our lodging, and we would not be reimbursed until returning to Germany. I will be staying for about 4 months so I'm a little worried. I have family where they are sending me...will I be able to stay with them to save money?

I was not med-evaced stateside from Germany when we were stationed there, but due to pre-existing medical conditions, I had to be cleared before I was permitted to accompany my family because they did not have adequate facilities to treat me if I had a crisis. I have had to travel to larger MTFs than what is local here, so I can tell you about that...

You must have medical orders before you travel. Since the military is providing med-evac, you most certainly have orders.

You will be placed on high priority for a room at the destination Temporary Lodging Facility (helpful if you're a low priority status otherwise... I'm a retired dependent). You will be responsible for paying for your lodging and meals at the time of travel, and upon return you submit receipts (save everything!... even parking receipts) for reimbursement.

You are not required to stay in Lodging. If you have family at your destination, I encourage you to stay with them to save money up front. It may even be more comfortable for you.

Good luck with your treatment.

yes, you can stay with family, or see about Fisher House as well. it is routine that you will not be reimbursed until after you get back.

save every receipt. I found it easiest to bring along a legal sized envelope and place all my paperwork in there as I went along. made it much easier to submit the paperwork at the other end.

That's pretty typical given the circumstances (I am assuming TDY return status for this). Save you receipts from travel expenses and lodging. Save your itinerary too. It will make it much easier to fill out your travel voucher when you return. You can certainly save money during your trip, but Uncle Sugar should be paying you back. Figure one to two months before you see the green, depending on how fast your PSB/Finance peeps process it for you. Also, check with your S1/finance to see what entitlements you are eligible for.

If your family is within the local area of the hospital, then you should be fine. You should be able to check with your First Sergeant or Supervisor though.

If they let you... unfortunately the US doesn't have national Insurance like they do in Germany.. so it will be costly..

At a thousand bucks a day you would think that you have an option.
