I'm answering to you assuming you're living in the States.
If so I suggest you to buy a cell phone here, pay as you go, with a prepaid SIM card .The best deal is with Vodafone (they've Columbus card to talk low cost with the State) and also good rates to call in Italy:Other providers are WIND (good for Italy, not so good for the States) and TIM (the most expensive of the three).Another provider is "3" but it's mostly devoted to videophones and it's the most expensive.

However if you enter a VODAFONE or WIND shop (there are rather common in the largest towns) they can suggest the best solutions for yr requirements. There are also special offers every month and you can get cell phone and prepaid SIM card below 50 Euros.

The best way to do this is by either contacting your current service provider, and asking them for the unlock code to your cell phone. ONce you have your phone unlocked get a sim card from either vodafone or TIM. You will pay as you go. I suggest putting 50 euros on your phone. If you decide to purchase a cell phone over here in Italy, buy the cheapest one that you can find, and pay as you go! This is probably the best way to go.

I would suggest pay as you go, and buy a phone once you are here. I do not know where you're coming from, but here in Europe cell phones, whether prepaid, contract etc use SIM cards, unlike North America. Cell phone companies - TIM, Vodafone, 3 (most expensive)

Just buy a phone when you get there....I'm pretty sure all cell phone service in Italy is pay as you go...When we lived there for two years we just bought phones and then added minutes to them as we needed.....
You can add minutes at any cell phone shop or Tabachi shop.....Companies most used over there are Tim, Vodaphone,
