Break up with him- you've only been dating him a mere 6 weeks. There's not a long history to worry about.

Your friend is already part of your boyfriend's past. What benefit would it do if you give up your relationship? Would it make your bf think and realize that his ex deserves him better than you? Or would it make your bf think that you are the type who's not willing to defend your relationship?
Where's the guilt coming from? I assume you didn't steal something from her. Wasn't it her ex bf who approached you and asked you to go out with him?
Just make sure you're not being used by the guy to make his ex jealous about you.
Before getting too involved, focus on determining how this guy is sincere about your relationship with him rather than thinking of other matters that doesn't really have anything to do with both of you.

Talk to your friend and tell her the truth, that you didn't realize he was her ex. Communication is the key. Don't let things confuse you, just go talk to her and get her take on it. Then you can make your decision. Best of luck to you.

They broke up. He has moved on. Perhaps she has too. You have nothing to feel guilty about.
If you two are enjoying each other's company, enjoy it as much as you can. For all you know, your friend may already be aware of the situation.

See how she feels. If she says to break it up then forget about it and go out with him if you truly like him.

Ive been through this situation with my brother and my ex. when we broke up, my brother tried to hook up with her. What I would do is sit down and talk to your friend. See what she thinks about. It all depends on whether or not they split up on good terms. Hope this helps!
