I have had Irritable Bowel Syndrome for about 2 yrs now, and was just diagnosed with Ulcers also. My medication seemed to have my IBS under control and I just started to take meds for the ulvers it seemed to work too. then out of nowhere my ulcers started acting up, so i guess my meds dont work for that. But my IBS soon follows and its a combo of the both that really ***** with me.

Can IBS act up because of the ulcers?
And I'm taking Plavacid for my ulcer, should I start taking a antibiotic instead could it be bacterial?

It could be bacterial - get tested for H. Pylori . Also, the advice on ruling out Celiac is very good - a lot of doctors are terribly ignorant because they used to think it was a 1 in 10,000 disease. A few years ago, however, they figured out that it was more like 1 in 100. Also, the blood test is terribly inaccurate, but doctors put their faith in it. A lot of docs simply aren't up to speed on Celiac, which is a very dangerous ignorance. Celiac causes permanent, serious damage if left untreated.

At any rate, you should see your doctor about adjusting your treatment. You may need to try a different ulcer med, or it could require antibiotics. Also, look into diet changes that may alleviate your symptoms.

Finally, I get a LOT of great advice on the IBS board on WebMD - I'd recommend you post there, with as much information about your symptoms and history as you can think of. Someone's bound to have some good advice for you. The address is http://boards.webmd.com/webx?14@@.5987f421

I don't have any experience with ulcers, so I can't speak about that, but I was misdiagnosed with IBS for many years. Mine turned out to be celiac disease. I like to let people with IBS know about celiac just because it's a possibility that should be looked into.

They're starting to recommend that people with IBS, or IBS-like symptoms be tested for celiac disease, which is an intolerance to gluten (wheat, rye, barley and oats). A lot of people with celiac were misdiagnosed as having IBS for years. (18 years for me). It takes an average of 11 years for a person with celiac to be diagnosed.

Here's a webpage by the National Institutes of Health on celiac -
http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/celiac/

And another from the Mayo Clinic -

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/celiac-disease/DS00319

If that starts sounding familiar here are a couple of message boards for people with celiac and other gluten intolerances.

http://www.celiacforums.com

You can also be intolerant to other common foods and get IBS symptoms. Soy, corn, eggs, yeast, dairy, etc. You may want to think about keeping a food/symptoms journal and see if you can identify the culprit(s).

I hope you feel better soon.
