We are going out of town for Christmas and bringing our cat. The car ride will be about 10 hours. Any suggestions on something I can give my cat to calm her down/make her sleep in the car? The vet told me liquid benadryl would work, anyone have experience with this?

The kitty is coming with us mainly because we will be gone too long to leave her with just a supply of food and water, and everyone we trust to come into our house and take care of her is also going out of town. (We are fairly new to where we live and don't know many people) And it is much too expensive to leave her at the vet for two weeks.
We will be staying with my parents, who are fine with her coming.

My vet also recommends liquid benadryl (make sure the only ingredient is diphenhydramine and there are NO decongestants, etc in it or you could have serious side effects!!). Also make sure you double and triple check the dose with your vet, it is very safe... but anything in excess can be dangerous!

I've never tried it but many clients have and said it works. You might want to also check with your vet about how often to re-dose since it is a 10 hour car ride.

My question is: why are you taking the cat??? I personally leave my cat's at home with a big enough supply of food and water, or I pay the neighbors to come daily to feed and scoop the box. I wouldn't dream of traveling with my cats, but that's just me.

Some cats get so freaked out by travel and ending up in a new environment for a short time, that they will stop using the box or go elsewhere... is your host ok with this?

I have no idea what liquid benadry is, but I'd suggest keeping your cat in a clean litter box, the kind with a lid over it. Then, cover the box with a rag and have someone sit next to the cat n the litter box and comfort it by talking to it. This will let the cat know it's not alone in the car and that there is someone the cat can trust in the car with him.

A vet can supply her a seditive in order to maintain her calm. Get it from the vet and comply with the instructional materials cautiously. You may additionally desire to take a look at is as soon as a couple of days earlier than to look how your cat will react and to take a look at giving it to her as many cats dislike capsules. so much homeowners of apprehensive cats will use this throughout a protracted, quintessential shuttle. It's a lot simpler than driving for a number of hours with a howling cat.

The best thing to calm an animal is Rescue Remedy. It is all natural and can be bought at health food stores. I gave it to my two when I drove from Washington State to Florida with them. You can always take it if it doesn't work on kitty. :) I know people that take it before they fly.

My two did great with it.
