Sounds like you will be having lots of fun. You can have it easy with the time you are allocating yourself. If you like, you can keep in touch with me at tongbn@yahoo.co.uk for travel ideas in Thailand, West Malaysia and Singapore. Would love to know how you are getting on.
Thailand should be fine to take it slow and learn a bit of their culture and custom. In the outlying provinces, you should be able to get by easily. Will suggest you skip Bangkok as the place is too modern to enjoy a stay, unless you are into shopping.
I believe afetr a week there, you will pretty much know where to move around.
Have fun, and see if you can keep in touch.

Jeezzzzzzz!! 4 and a half months in Thailand! You can even go around Thailand just only 1 month! 4 months and a half -
I suggest you to spend 1 week in Bangkok because if it's more than 1 week you will get bored but if you love nightlife and bustling city you'd love to spend more time there. Bangkok has some nice temple and shopping arcade around but it likes other metropolis around the world.
Then, go to the east - spend time in Koh Chang and the island around before enters to Cambodia to Sihanuville,Phnom Pehn, and Siem Leap (Angkor). Then, cross the border back to Thailand at Aranyaprathet.
Go up to the northeast region - visit some sand castle which is smaller than Angkor or maybe get lost in the local Thai village, elephant festival in Surin(actually, around Nov.) or if you're interested in Thai silk you can come to Khon Kaen.
Then, go to Ubon and cross border to Southern Laos. Go to Pakse, Champasak to watch some khmer ruin and Muang Khong to watch Niagara of Asia. Then, ride up to Vientiane for visit some temples and ride up to stop in Vangvieng - it has beautiful limestone landscape with many caves to explore and some hill tribes! Then, ride up to Laung Prabang with the emtremely traditional old temple style! It's very beautiful and charming town!
Then, take a boat upstream to Chaing Khong on the Northern tip of Thailand. Explore mountainous landscape with Hill tribes in Chaing Rai Province and go to do some trekking and white water rafting in Chaing Mai. For more advanture, you can go further to Pai for white water rafting and beautiful scenery trekking.
Then, take a bus down to Sukhothai province - it has 700 years old ruin palace. Sukhothai used to be Thai Capital over700 years ago. From Sukhothai, you can go down to Ayutthaya to watch some spectular ancient temple and palace. It used to be Thai Capital over 400 years ago.
Then, from Ayutthaya you can go to Kanchanaburi - it has river kwai bridge(the important of this bridge is Japanese want to make this railway to connect with Myanmar which is ruled by Great Britain during WWII and the labor comes from the lose countries and thousand of peoples died while they were building it!). Not only the history, it has tiger temple, many beautiful cave and waterfall. From Kanchanaburi, you can go back to Bangkok to take a bus down south to the beach.
I suggest you to take a bus to to Koh Tao. You can go some snokle and it also offers you the best scuba diving in the world! You can hops around the island to Koh Nang Yuan, Koh Phang-ngan and Koh Samui(Koh=island). Spends a month on the beach would be perfect! Then, go to the pearl of Andaman sea - Phuket. It's quite crowded though but it has lots of nice beaches. Also you can do snokling and scuba diving in the islands nearby such as Similan Islands and Surin Islands - those are the world premier diving site! From Phuket, take a cruise to Phi Phi Island - it's worth a visit for the spectular landscape you'll ever see! afterthat, take a cruise to Railay to do the world-class rockclimbing! It also has the nice beaches, embraced you with limestone mountain and fresh seafood grill!! From Krabi, you can go to Lanta Island - it has nice white sand beaches. And move down to Trang for emerald cave - you have to swimming to the lagoon inside the cave. From Trang, go down to Satun and visit one of the hide-away island of Thailand- Tarutao Island. The natural of this island still alive and it used to be the jail before! There're many spectecular island to visit around Tarutao such as Li-pe island and Hin-ngam islands.
From Tarutao you can go to Langkawi in Malaysia and move on to Penang by boat. The transportation in Malaysia is quite good so you can easily go to Singapore!
And that's all the highlight in Thailand and the neighbor!
