Greeneyed: Some trains have Sleeper Cars with pull-down beds (Pullmans) for long-distance travel that people can sleep in instead of sleeping in their train seat. They're called 'sleepers' for short.
This however has nothing to do with the Question, because it's either told wrong or just doesn't make sense.
Sorry, dave h, but the sleeper cars ARE called sleepers. But that you for explaining the joke so all of us non-railway people could get it, too!

Greeneyed, this is quite funny because Mitch's explanation is wrong!
Sleepers are the name of the regularly placed blocks that support the rails of the train track-hence trains run over sleepers.
Geddit now?

Must be a regional thing. We call them ties here. We would have to ask"Why is it dangerous to wear a tie on trains?"
