The appeals can take years, and whats even worse is even if the person who is on death row admits to the crime and want to be put to death, there are people who will step in and file even more appeals on behalf of that person even if they don't want to appeal.
Do we need a better system, yes. A through review of the case by an independent body might help a lot. And yes I believe in the death penalty, could I be talked into life without parole? If life without parole meant you sent someone to jail and they don't get out until they are dead, then yes. But it doesn't mean that right now. There are people who got Life without the possibility of parole out on the streets right now. And I'm not talking about people who won an appeal or escaped.
Some got Governor pardons, or the parole board changed it from without to with parole, then gave them parole. I know of one case where the person was sent to prison, the had life without parole and got paroled, that person was picked up several times after that and then killed another person. So yes I have proof that it happens.
Hoped it helped

Here in California it has been decided that lethal injection is "cruel" punishment for someone on death row. Can you fricken believe that? I also heard that in Florida they have stopped lethal injection because the last inmate they tried to put to death "suffered" for 30 minutes before he died. I think WalMart's ammo is cheap. Why doesn't the State go there, buy in bulk and use that method? Just make sure they get a good sharp shooter so the inmate dies on the first try. We wouldn't want them to suffer would we?

This is the biggest cause for the death penalty not being a stronger deterrent to violent crime! The average felon looks at life in five year increments. He doesn't believe that, given his life style, that he could put two of these increments together in the first place. His life expectancy is that of a sand flea, so if you tell him that he still has 20 years to live before his appeals run out, he has gained life expectancy, not lost.

Anyone sentenced to death gets an automatic appeal of their sentence, and then they can appeal two 6 different levels of the court system, and then some others, like the ACLU, Innocence project and several other organizations can file on the inmates behalf!!

Because they appeal right after the sentencing, and if that doesn't work they appeal again, and again, until they run out of options. Each appeal takes years to process.
