Go to your local SPCA, and see if they do personality matching.... matching a specific dog's personality to what is needed for your home. That there will be the best kind of dog.
Animals needing rescue are the absolute best, and many of them are mixed breed, which can often mean they are more stable than purebred dogs.
Best of luck!

i would reccomend a vizsla (vish-la) thry are very cool animals and are about medium size. maybe a little smaller than a golden retriever as an adult (female 45-50 lbs. Male 50-55 lbs) i have one of my own and they are really good at stating home alone i would say when they are about 1 or 2 years old. depending on the pup you get. as a pup though if they are confident you will always ome back they will be okay in a cage for a couple hours. actually for a young pup who is in a cage i would recomend a KONG. Which is a device that you put dog treats in and the dog does its best to take them out. well i hope that i have helped you a little.

Im seeing a lot of people giving out high energy and attentive dogs. Labs, Goldens, Huskies, Vizslas..all very high energy and attentive dogs that need constant attention. A lower energy dog that wouldnt need as much excercise or attention would be a Scottish Deerhound, relaxed dogs. Depends on what youre doing though, why will you be gone most of the day. If youre in college this would be no time to own a dog. If youre at work most of the time, then maybe consider a dog. But aside that I would strongly advise a Scottish Deerhound.

German shepherds! I have had 3 now i am down to 2 because my oldest died 1 year ago, my husband and i work and go to school, so were gone from 6 in the morning untill 4 in the afternoon and even my oldest dog who was 21 when he died would hold it all day, but any dog you get will chew and ptty untill it is trained, but remember to buy chew toys and when that puppy picks something up and he/she is not suppose to have it, take it tell it no then give it their chew toy do it repeatedly, and for potty training get a kennel and that dog should be in there all the time when you get up take it out feed it, wait 20 minutes take it out again then put it in the cage about 3-6 wks it will get the picture! never whip it.. if it peas or poos in the house show it scold it and put it back in the cage.

What else do you expect this dog to do, other then sit at home all day? Do you want a social dog to go to the beach with? A dog to protect the house? The best all around dog, if you can afford it, is a high quality German Shepherd from a reputable breeder. Not too big, not too small, daily brushing excessive hair loss, and they are tons of fun if you socialize them properly.

Hi,
That depends what you mean by big...There are plenty of big dogs with the temperament you are looking for in the shelters...If you're looking for a "gentle giant" dog that is very intelligent, very loyal, able to stay at home alone for a while, a dog that is very friendly with people, loves kids, yet protective when there's a need for that and a dog that is very, very loving, affectionate and that is described as "super intelligent", I would recommend you a Shiloh Sepherd dog. They are expensive, but they are worth it. I have a wonderful girl and she's a real blessing and joy.
Hope that helps Good luck in your search.:)

We have a Rhodesian Ridgeback... they are the BEST dogs!! They are absolutely gorgeous and very regal looking. They are also pretty intimidating looking. They are hound dogs, and hound dogs are notoriously lazy, so they aren't too hyper. They were originally bred as Lion Hunters in Africa, so you know they are tough... she is super protective and very loyal. They are smart (and can be very stubborn). We got her when my girls were 4 and 5 and she has treated them like her own... she has a very gentle touch for such a big dog which is a good trait to have for a family dog. Also, she is a short haired dog so you won't have a house full of shedded hair... gross. Good Luck...

I think the most popular family pets are labs and golden retrievers. They are both great dogs. Each of my parents had one growing up and they talk about them all the time. Right now I have Collie/Lab mix. He is the best dog and behaves so well. He's a big dog, too. He is probably our most behaved dog and he is so great with other people!

the best kind of dog is a lab. they are great with kids and people. i had a chocolate lab named Buddy and he was the greatest. i miss him so much he died in September. as long as you let them out to go to the bathroom, they'll be fine until you get home.
