Can DECT cordless phones be used without connecting to a phone line?

There's a **great** deal in newspaper. I'd like to use the 4 handset system as a cordless intercom system. (phone base not connected to phone line). Is this possible? If not, why not?

I'm sure it's possible to do that. Just pick up one handset and page another one on your system.
