Some historians say it was just the second half of the First World War. There was an ntermission -- then things got goin' again with Japan's 1931 invasion of China. Ethiopia, Spanish Civil War, Munich, then the main event in late August 1939.

The war started in 1939 for Britain, Canada, France, Australia, New Zealand, the Soviets, etc... The US didn't participate until Japan dragged them kicking and screaming into the war in 1941.
