There are "dessert" wines that are quite sweet, usually white. None will taste like grape juice, as they are all fermented, meaning they contain some alcohol. Usually consumed after dinner.
There are also "fruity wines" that have a certain sweetness relevant to different fruits, but still contain alcohol.
Your mother may be referring more to the "dry" wines, which generally leave no after taste on the pallette. Some can taste a bit bitter to a new taster. Other dry wines can be quite pleasant. Most people prefer a dry wine with dinner, as it leaves no after taste to interfere with food. It may even have some affect on cleansing the pallette, for the next portion of food.
Usually, at wine tasting parties, sugared grapes are served as a cleanser of the pallette, so that one wine does not mingle with the next wine.
Some wines have a bit of a fruit taste, not too sweet.
One of the nice sweet wines is a wine from Germany. It is made from grapes that have been exposed to frost. This is usually rare and when fermented, the wine has a distinct and sweet flavor.
The selection of wines and the plethora of taste is too numerous to list. Location and soil types have a great affect on grapes and the resultant taste of wine. Some crops at different times are better than other years and result in superior, more expensive wines.
Don't rush, but a time will come when you may enjoy several different kinds, without becoming addicted.

there are so many wines with different tastes.
You can get dry, sweet, wet and a combination of dry sweet..... Red, white and chardonay(pink). To some the taste of wine is bitter, it has kind of a zest to it, kind of a zing. Having never had wine before I would suggest you try a chardonay or cold duck. Cold duck is a sweet red wine. If you want a stronger taste go for a merlot or a burgundy. Some people drink it warm but I prefer mine chilled. And, yes it does have a little bit of grape flavor but it does not taste like grape juice. You could even try wine coolers for starters. They come in a variety of flavors. Seagrams puts out the best ones. I hope this has been helpful.

Wine generally does not taste like grape juice. Describing it is like asking someone to describe how milk tastes or how beer tastes. It's hard to do and can vary with the type of wine that you are tasting.
Some wines are "terrible" and others are divine. But, it's all a matter of personal preference. : )

There are lots of different kinds of wines, so it depends on what kind you're interested in.
In general, your mom is right that wines do not taste like grape juice. It's a lot different.
Ask your mom if she will buy a little one-serving bottle for you and let you try it at home under her supervision. That way, you can satisfy your curiosity, and she can ensure you are being responsible.

You sound young, how old are you?
It all depends on what kind of wine it is. Red, fruity wines taste kind of like a sour grape juice, which is probably the closest tipe of wine to grape juice. I don't really know though, as I prefer hard liquor cocktails when I drink.

No, it's not at all like grape juice.
The basic taste is a little acidic, kind of tangy, but there are a lot of other flavors in there.
There are reds, like Merlot that taste a little like oak wood smells.
There are whites, like chardonnay, that have a little hint of butter and apples.
The pink (Rose) ones, like White Zinfandel or White Merlot are very sweet, without a lot of complexity, and might be a good place to start, though I don't like them much myself.
Every wine is a little different, and it's kind of an aquired taste. You have to experiment a bit to find what you like.

It all depends on the wine that you are drinking. If you like a sweeter taste then you are going to want to go with a Sauvignon Blanc or a Chardonnay. They will give you a lot of fruity flavors. White Zinfandel's are okay, but I personally don't care too much for them. If you like that lock jaw feeling that you might want to go with a Red Zinfandel of a Shiraz.
Basically, they all taste so different the only way that you are going to know for sure is if you try them yourself. Start out with some whites, they will be good starters for you. You just have to find what you like. Don't give up though. Giving up after you have tried 2 or 3 is like eating twice and saying that you dint like food.
By the way. None of them taste anything like grape juice.

I had taste of my mum's and it tastes awful. I think wine is fermented, but whatever its called makes it taste a lot more bitter than grape juice. It also tastes quite sour, but I suppose some wines differ. It smells really strong and heady as well. Grape juice is so much better, but some non-alcoholic wines taste just like it.

It depends on where it is from, how old it is,if it is white or red and quality. If you have per say Californian Napa Valley wine, then it is sweet yet having a bitterness to it.It is very strong and a very deep red color.
If you have red wine from Sicily,Italy, then i is very sweet and will give you a bit of a buzz in the morning. That is,if you drink two bottles:).
White wine is very soft in its taste but can be strong. It is very easy to drink and good mixed with sparkling water.Half and half.
The Greeks and Romans used to mix their red wine with water because it was so strong and intoxicating.
