First we have to understand what karma mean. It's the result of our action - good or bad. When there is a doer there is a deed. So if you take out the doer then there cannot be a deed. Spiritually speaking it's our ego that makes us believe that we are the doers while in fact it's the god who is behind anything that takes place in this world. Without his intent nothing even moves. So in short, when we do things - physical or even mental then we are incurring a karma that will bring a result -positive or negative dependent upon our motive behind doing it.
The theory of karma is so scientific that if we fully understand it, we can prevent a lot of "misfortune" in future. Even in our next life if we believe in that of course.

Relax and get on with things - we're apparently doing it all the time.

It helps if you are consciously aware that what you do at any given moment can and will call down a reaction in the future... I know the last time I did something I knew to be wrong, I was relieved when (in a very definible way) the "bill", so to speak, was presented for payment a few weeks later...

As a Wiccan friend said, "I am a white witch because I know enough about the way things work to know I HAVE to be good, there are no alternatives. Well, there are, but go that way and you soon know about it, an it isn't pleasant. The way you think and act always calls up a reaction, and there are no ways around that"

Every action is based on past karma and leads to future karma.

That's what karma is.

It's like Newtons Third Law (every action has a equal reaction) except on a cognitive level.

Jen-ee-fu.says" well, according to deepak chopra, by doing good things (ie being generous) we create a karmic vaccuum, and good things will be drawn to us"

Deepak Chopra has never read original Hindu Religious Texts in SANSKRIT at all and he has never done "Adhyayanam".He does not know the difference between :"Dasaratha" and "Daasaratha"---"Vasudeva" and "Vaasudeva".He does know to recite Vedam in Gaayatram/Anushtup/Ttrishtup/Jagathi/Bangthi Chandas. What he knows about "KARMA"?!!! It is unfortunate that jeen-ee-fu has found nobody else except Deepak Chopra to quote!!!!!

Give and it will come back to you, good measure , pressed down, shaken together and running over. Also love unconditionally for you will reap what you sow.
And know that if you sow the wind you will reap the whirlwind, so love your neighbour as yourself and do good to all men.
