First, please don't do what Lauren suggests. Frightening kitty only makes kitty want to stay away from you.
Any kitten or cat can be trained, or retrained, to use a litter box in short time. Cats naturally want to bury their bathroom products, as they would in the wild, to keep preditors from finding them.
There are a few reasons why kittens/cats don't use a litter box.
If it's dirty. Clean the litter box once or twice every day, and dump the litter once a week, wash the box, and refill with litter.
Kitty may not like the feel of the cat litter product you're using. You can try switching to a different type of litter and see if kitty's feet are less bothered by the new litter. I don't do that. Personally, I expect my kittens to use the litter I put in the box.
If Kitty can smell where he, or another kitty, has stained the carpet. Any area where kitty had an accident needs to be cleaned, and a ordor repellant applied. There are commercial brands at a feed store or pet store. The ordor will bring any cat/kitten back to that area to use in lieu of the litter box.
Limit kitty's area of movement to start retraining kitty to use his box consistently. Kitty should be kept in a large carrier with his litter box or in a small bathroom with his litter box. Kitty must stay in that confined space until kitty uses the litter box without fail. As he is successful in using the box, his area gets larger.
I put my foster kittens in the litter box, lift their front paw, and dig in the litter with it. Gives them the feel of the litter and an idea what to do with it. Usually, at first, they play in the litter box kicking cat litter outside the box. That's why I surround the litter box with lots of newspapers. Within a short period of time, kitten will use the box for it's real purpose.
One other thought. Kittens/cats do not like their food and water dishes close to their litter box.
Just be patient and consistent, and in a couple of days, kitty will be using his litter box without fail.

keep doing that on a regular basis. When he finally makes a wee for you (or a log) in the litter box, make sure you give him lots of attention and tell him what a good kitty he is.
when he makes wee (or a log) anywhere else, tell him NO in your Mommy voice, (which is firm, but not too loud) pick him up and put him in the box and repeat the process above. Never hit or yell or they will just be scared to pay attention to what you are trying to teach them.
sooner or later he'll get the message that wee in the box is good and wee anywhere is not so good. Be kind about it, though. He's an animal and he needs your patience to learn what you want from him.
Don't make your cat stand in the box for longer than a few minutes if he's not going. You'll just have to wait for the next opportunity to present itself. Look for the signs that he's looking for a place to go wee and put him in the box for a few minutes and hopefully he'll go so you can let him know that's good.

When you catch him going wher he isnt supposed to be going then tell him NO! Give him a little swat on the butt and put his nose in it. Then take him over and put him in the litter box. Also the pet store sells this citrus spray that you can spray on any place that he has gone before just spray it wherever they dont like the smell and wont go there again. Good luck.

Put the kitten in the litter box after he has eaten and walk away. He will get the idea, but be patient. Do not yell at him!

Keep you eye on him and when he looks like he is about to do his business, pick him up and take him over and put him into the box. Smile and pet him when he finishes. After a few times he will catch on that he has done something good.
Conversely, when he goes anywhere but the box, frown and let him know he has done wrong.
He will catch on.
Good luck.

If your kitten is going in one particular place on your carpet, that is where I would put it's litter box. With some tissue pick up his mess & put it in the litter box,go get him,put him in the litter box and take one of his little paws and show him how to scratch the litter! He will get the hang of it!

My cats went own their own, they are not like dogs you really don't have to do any special trainining. The only time you have to really worry is if their litter box is really dirty and then they will go someone else or if he is a male and is marking his territory.
