My daughter starts to drive soon - my car is in too high an insurance bracket and too powerful for her to learn on. I would like to buy another family car for her to learn on that is cheap to buy, low insurance bracket, cheap to run and safe - any advice?

So basically, something that's easy to drive with a low-power engine and thereore a low insurance group is required, which'll point you in the directon of the Vauxhall Corsa which, as insurance goes, starts at grp. 1 for a 1.0 12v, or the Nissan Micra 1.0 with grp. 3. Very easy to drive and dependable, if you daughter doesn't care about image too much.

If image is indeed an issue, steer towards a Fiat Cinq/Seicento. 899cc cooking models are grp. 1 or 2, and are light and fun to drive, but build quality isn't great on these, space in the rear is compromised, and the gearchange could be better. If the insurers allow you to do so, try and go for a Sporting version (grp. 3), with a more powerful 1.1l engine, imporved street cred, and a better gearchange. However, watch out for abused examples and ensure the Sporting tag isn't an opportunity for the insurer to cash in too much.

I learnt in a 1988 Citreon AX. The clutch was stiff and sharp, the steering was heavy and the brakes weren't that great.
However, I feel it helped me because I learnt to drive a car with very little assistance, no power steering, abs or anything like that. Now i feel I can jump in any car and drive it regardless of age, whereas I know friends that won't drive a car without power steering because they've never driven one and are too scared to.
Also the insurance was low, tax was low and fuel economy was excellent. Perfect for any young driver on a budget

Sorry to say but I told my son when he turns 16 he will be driving a tuna boat. What I mean is he will be getting a 1975-1979 buick lesaber. It may have a 6 or 8 cyl in it but it is all steal and will protect him incase of an accident. This car will be passed down to my girls if it is not wrecked. They know there 2nd vehicle will be a Jeep Wrangler.

Volvo 1987 to 1992

By the Volvo thats what my parents bought for me. They are older, but unlike todays cars they are made with pure steel, none of that plastic sides crap. Which means should your child get into an accident the other car will hurt more than your child. It is very affordable, if you look in your auto classifeds, you might find one. I would guess you could get one for 2,000. They are very gas efficent.

They are Volvo 240 Sedan between the years of 1987 and 1992.

They come highyl recommended by Click and Clack the NPR Car Talk Radio Show. (Experts in Automotive Parts and Cars)

An older Toyota Carola , or Corsa, the type that are real car shaped, that a squarish one with a proper boot and a bonnet that you can see the end of so you can get to learn the length of the car, most new cars are designer things that you can not see where the back and front is and are very difficult to park

Ford Ka or something of a similar size. Make sure its between 3 and 5 years old, anything older would be unreliable and try to stick to well-known makes as the others will cost a fortune to insure and maintain. Nothing bigger than a 1.0 litre engine either. Are you old enough to have a 17 year old daughter???/

Toyota, Honda, Nissan, anything that is in there economy class, and at least 5 years old. these things should lower purchase cost, and tax/tag cost, and lower insurance. Also remeber most insurance companies offer a good student discount for students maintaining a B average in school.

Buy a Parkers Car Price Guide. about £3.50 - a good investment.
It lists loads of cars, their insurance group, how many mpg it does and how much you can expect to pay depending on the age.
You're probably looking at a Corsa, Ka, Fiesta, lupo, Polo, C1, Micra, fortwo......the list goes on. Depends how much you want to pay.
