I think, Maruti has its sales backup and after sales that cannot be compared and Esteem is a car which is here for quite long. So proving its worth. The next in your segment I feel is Hyundai's Accent. Then Indigo. But I would suggest you to go out to the show room talk to the sales person and gather information. Sit for a while compare all the details and then decide on it.

I have owned both the Esteem VX and the Indigo LX during the past 6 years. On a rating of 5 stars, 1 being worst and 5 best.
comfort: Indigo-4, Esteem-2
handling: Indigo-3, Esteem-3
Mileage: Indigo-5 (i get abt 15kmpl-city+highway), Esteem-3(esteem used to give 13-14kmpl-city+highway)
Long distance comfort: Indigo-5, Esteem-3
Servicing, Cost and Spares: Indigo-3(reliability needs improvement) Esteem-4(much more reliable)
Safety: Indigo-5, Esteem-3
Cost of Ownership: Indigo-3, Esteem-2
I would go for the Indigo if i would be driving long distances on pretty bad roads, and since its a diesel, it is savings too. However if its plain and simple city driving with lots of start -stop, then the Esteem would be my obvious choice.

Why are you fixed on 1.3Liters?
Anyway in order of price and driving pleasure, here's the list:
Honda City VTEC 1.4 (100hp)

Esteem LXi 1.3
Tata Indigo Petrol GLG
Have you considered the Swift? it is also 1300cc. So is the Getz.

esteem vxi appears to be the best in this price range... as it has better facilities compared to other cars in the same price range, because it has been indigenised almost 85% and lesser components are imported from Japan...
