Salmon is a high-protein, low carbohydrate food that also includeds Omega-3 Fatty Acids...a vital component of managing cholesterol in a good diet.
The problem comes from whether your salmon is wild caught or domestically farm-grown. Recent studies have shown that both level of Omega-3 in farm grown salmon is lower and the levels of mercury (or other toxins) can be higher. Wild is best, but it is also the most expensive.

Salmon in general is healthy because it is an oily fish that contains good amounts of omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 helps prevent a variety of illness, such as diabetes and heart disease. One thing to remember though, farm-raised salmon tends to contain higher levels of mercury and other toxins. It is better to buy wild salmon. It's more expensive, but you have less chance of consuming too much mercury.

Few single foods bring as many valuable contributions to the table in significant quantities as salmon. It is an excellent source of high-quality protein, containing all the essential amino acids. Salmon contains vitamins A, D, B6 and B2, as well as niacin and riboflavin. Calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and phosphorus are also present in appreciable amounts in this choice seafood. Salmon is an excellent food for everyone, and especially for both young children and older people, because it is so easy to digest.
In the case of Omega-3 oils, a series of eicosanoids are produced, which may result in a decreased risk of heart disease, inflammatory processes, and certain cancers.
Omega-3 oils also exert additional protective effects against coronary heart disease by:
• decreasing blood lipids (cholesterol, low-density lipoproteins or LDL, and triglycerides)
• decreasing blood clotting factors in the vascular system
• increasing relaxation in larger arteries and other blood vessels
• decreasing inflammatory processes in blood vessels
Additional studies have provided exciting news about the benefits of Omega-3 oils for individuals with arthritis, psoriasis, ulcerative colitis, lupus erythematosus, asthma, and certain cancers. Research studies have consistently shown that Omega-3 fatty acids delay tumor appearance, and decrease the growth, size, and number of tumors.

Salmon, like mackerel, is an oily fish, which means it is high in Omega 3 fatty acids. These contribute to brain and heart health. If you have a choice, go for wild over farmed salmon. The flesh is firmer and they contain no food coloring - their pink color is all natural.

Fish is a good source of protein and doesn’t have the high saturated fat that fatty meat products do. Fatty fish like mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon are high in two kinds of omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
