Until they go bad.

In the fridge they will last for months unless you have a crooked merchant selling them. Fresh eggs will keep for 6 months without refrigeration if submerged in a waterglass solution (sodium silicate).

There is a store chain in Calif. called Albertson's that regularly takes outdated eggs and puts them in new cartons. I've gotten rotten eggs off of their shelves.

A bad egg will float, just as bon b and christine said. You can use an egg that sinks. As long as you are cooking the egg, you won't get salmonella poisoning. If your using it raw, for example in egg nog, if i were you i would use some nice fresh eggs.

Eggs technically don't even have to be refrigerated, but the USDA set a guideline for refrigeration at below 40 degrees to extend the life of eggs and cut the risk of salmonella. Eggs today are processed (pasteurized) and this usually means they are still good past their expiration date. The way to tell is by putting it in a bowl of water. If it sinks it is still good. If it floats throw it out. The floating is caused the a buildup of gas that tells you the egg is bad.

So if you submerge a very fresh egg in water, it will lie on the bottom. An egg that is a week or so old will lie on the bottom but bob slightly. An egg that is three weeks or so old will balance on its small end, with the large end reaching for the sky. And a bad egg will float.

That's how to tell if an egg is good or not.

I researched a number of sites. The consensus seems to be five weeks. Safety is not an issue for months after that, but the whites get thinner and less fluffy.

I would keep eggs longer than 2 weeks after the exp. date and it also depends on the coldness of your fridge eggs should be kept at 40 degrees and no warmer

A week because usually the expiration date is just the sell by date. You still have seven days after the sell by date to use.
