I live in NZ now, and I've arrived from England a little while ago. I've lived in many countries, also the US, Canada, Britain, and France - New Zealand wins hands down over all of them. It's small, quiet, and quaint; but it feels much bigger when you're in it. People often ask me what it's like, and I have constructed these references:
It's a bit like British Columbia, Canada, but with palm trees.
Or:
It's a bit like Northern California with smaller roads and less people.
Or:
It's a bit like North Wales with lots of sunshine and palm trees.
Or:
It's bit like the Ticino with British-inspired architecture.
At least in my opinion.

I lived there for 2 years. It's a beautiful, amazing country with great people. Of all the people I know who have visited (dozens) I've never heard anyone say a bad word about it.
Just don't expect too much from the weather! It's a small island in the middle of a big ocean, and the weather is never guaranteed, so not the place for a relaxing beach holiday. The best time to go is Jan or Feb.

Visited NZ a few times and it is our favorite holiday destination. Laid back but at the same time quite dynamic. Plenty to do especially if U R into the outdoors and sport, (which is an obsession). Absolutly love the Taranaki regon. Off the beaten track so not the usual tourest traps. Great Place.

I came to NZ in 1968. Apart from 5 years working overseas I've been here ever since and married a NZ sheila. So I like it. Main criticisms are the national obsession with sport and the free market economic ideas which caught on in the 1980s. But it's a secular society in which most of us don't give a stuff about religion or ethnicity, all the basic services like health, education and policing are good but not perfect, it's still cheap to eat and be housed, it's a much more interesting place than it was in 1968 because of immigration from places like Chile, Asia and Africa, and all the exotic things like their cuisine that these migrants bring. We can't afford overseas trips like you can in Europe, but that matters less than it used to, in these Internet days. Having thousands of kilometres of water between us and our unstable Asian and Pacific neighbours isn't a bad thing. And our government isn't a slavish toady to Bush like Britain's and Australia's are.

It is beautiful from North to South and for such a small country the diversity of sights and activities is amazing. There's a little bit of everything for everyone. If you're going to visit, you'll want at lease a couple of weeks.
