Seek out a behaviorist. It might help the answerers here to know what kind of dog he is, that way we know how to approach the situation, regarding temperment and such.
Was the child doing anything to the dog that would cause the dog to become irritated and lash out? Often, that is the case of domestic housedogs biting, is children who do not have proper doggie manners. And if the dog is a breed that does not have much patience for a smaller child, then that could also have something to do with it.
In the meantime, I would keep the dog away from the child, and anyother smaller, younger children, just to be on the safe side until you figure out what the cause of the bite was. Was the dog up to date on shots? If not, the dog should be quarantined away from the family completely and the child should perhaps undergo a rabies series to prevent a rabies-related infection. If the dog was vaccinated, then just keep the bite wound clean and free of infection, and get it checked out by a doctor.
Best of luck

Is your dog getting old? Has he been around children before and been good? Did the child do something to him? This is a hard question to answer without knowing all of the specifics. I would say from now on make sure he is nowhere near children.

I am a dog behaviorist and have also personally owned an aggressive dog so I know the fear that it invokes in the owners. Email me with the exact incident as much as you can tell me and I will give you pointers on how to stop it. Dogs should never be hit, this only makes the situation worse.
Additional info- I need you to either email me your email address or confirm your address my email back to you is not going through.

do you spoil your dog and treat it like a human? Because dogs have a instinct to become the top dog in the pack. If you treat it like yourselves, it will then try to become the dominant being in your house. Including biting people.

How bad was the bite? If there was bleeding from the child and the dog tasted it, then it culd turn, because it would want more blood.

The dog should be punished by spanking him and telling him NO! if he doesn't straigten his act or he bites you, NO MATTER WHAT take him to a trainer, the pound, or put him down
