Once you (and especially your feet) are used to it, eight miles a day shouldn't cause any problems. I suggest you spend the next couple of weeks building up to it.

If your not used to walking such a distance you may want to start out small, then work your way up to 8 miles little by little. Wear good shoes that fit you well so you wont have back aches, and carry water with you so you don't get dehydrated. Also, you may not want to eat directly before or after you do this. You should wait about 45 min- hour (just like swimming) because it takes a lot of blood circulation to your stomach to digest that food. You need that blood to carry oxygen to your body when your doing exercise and since the stomach is less important in this case the body wont give it all the blood it needs and you'll get a stomach ache ! Good Luck! I hope you keep your goal!

that's such a big question where are you walking
around town in the country are you in a hot or cold country are you walking because you want to lose weigh or because you need to get some where.
1 wear appropriate clothing layers are a good plan in case you get too hot or too cold make sure you take a waterproof layer with you and a reflective jacket if you are going to be walking near a road
2 wear appropriate foot ware are you going to be wearing trainers or shoes or are you going to be wearing hiking boots make sure you don't buy yourself a new pair of shoes for this if you already have take a spare pair of old shoes along the first couple of times as new shoes need to be worn in or you will be in agony and have loads of blisters
3 make sure you have a mobile phone especially if you are walking in the country you don't want to have been walking 4 hours and twist your ankle and not have a way to call some one for a lift home
4 I'm assuming this is for exercise 8 miles might be a bit far especially if you are unused to walking you might be better off walking say 4 miles a day for the first week and adding a mile more each week until you are doing 8 a day or if you are set on 8 a day maybe break it up into 2 sessions of 4 miles morning and evening
5 make sure you take a drink of some sort with you you don't want to get dehydrated remember water is the best bet

A visit to the doctor to make sure all your walking parts are in good order, and you have no other complications healthwise is recommended. Get really good walking shoes. Map out different routes, unless you have a safe area (well lit school track or mall) to walk in, so you don't get predictable for muggers.
You may want to start slower so if (I am assuming this) you have a job that is 8 miles away, between now and Jan 1, you may want to start working up to that 8 miles, to allow your muscles to become accustomed.

I like a good walk of 6-8 miles. Traffic on small roads is a serious hazard. They think they are Colin McRae and they only have to hit you once. Having said that it is the best form of exercise. Especially if there is a pub at the finish line

I agree with several others, since you asked that question it implies that you don't have much experience walking.
Consider, a 4 mph pace is a rather speedy walk, if you get much faster it turns into jogging.
Walking 8 miles will require a good 2 hours of steady, on a mission, walking.
Start slower, good shoes, stay on a level surface if possible, make sure that you can physically handle the strain and my own waking regimen is based on time rather that distance. I walk 30 minutes everyday.
I can, as I improve, walk faster and increase the distance. Right now I walk slower to be able to walk with my wife, that's more important to me than wearing rubber off of my shoes.

A good sturdy pair of ankle high walking boots. Wear two pairs of long thick socks. Light weight water proof coat with hood. Drinks bottle, Ruck sack. Start a few weeks before the actual event, for the exercises. So its not to much of a strain at the time.

make sure your footwear is good, go to a local 'sweatshop' because they put you on a treadmill that will help them read how you foot lands, therefore being able to give you the best stability or any sports shop as they will be able to tell you the best kinda thing 2, refuel with water regulary, eat well, keep focused and also warm up n cool down along with stretching, you may find after the first few walks your hip flexors (top of your leg) hurt, this will ease up! all in all good luck! x

Get a decent set of waterproofs and high visibility reflectors etc. Get a decent music player (and some decent music to go in it). Give yourself plenty of time. Wear a decent pair of shoes, ideally walking boots, (I highly recommend Hi-Tec VLites). Make sure your shoes are broken in, if not, wear at least 2 pairs of socks and carry some plasters. You WILL get blisters for the first week or so if you're not used to walking.
Good luck.
