I need to prepare for the SAT subject test French exam. I know a lot of the basics of french. However, my class at school moves very slowly and I do not feel I learn anything. For the test I need to know a lot of vocabulary, and grammer. How should I study vocabulary? Do you reccomend just looking through a French dictionary, or are there any books that you reccomend?

When we speak or write in any given language we always use background knowledge; that is to say, when the individual speaks or simply ponders over a subject there is always the presence of the Self in this act. My recommendation is that you should look for those topics that you think define you as an individual,And that you do not focus so much on the language as a system but as a means to achieve those topics that are of your sphere of action: The things you daily speak or dream about. Do not go around just reading or watching stuff that has no relation whatsoever with you at any level: You will increase your vocabulary by this means of action as you "find yourself" in this other language.
Another thing is that you should look for those expressions, those images that are distant from your own language and that are 100% a reflexion of that culture's background. There is one that comes to mind in this moment from French "Faire a votre tete" and you will have to excuse me for not using the accents but I do not know where to find them here.

Reading in Fench is probably a more valuable study aid then simply studying a dictionary. You could also try watching films in French. Many DVD's allow you to choose a language. There are numerous publications in French and probably some books in your local or school library. If you feel that your class is going too slowly, you can always read ahead.

read french books, like actual novels or short stories or something of the sort, you'll learn that you know a lot more vocab than you thought, and the words that you don't know, look up.
