1) The National Zoo. The Panda exhibit is wildly popular, of course. And you can watch naked mole rats walking through clear plastic tunnels. Don't tap on the tunnels.
2) Smithsonian Air and Space museum.
3) Smithsonian American History, even if you just go to the popular culture/TV exhibit. All of the Smithsonians have lines to go through security. If you don't have a bag to be searched, you can get through the line faster.
4) There is a sweet indoor, heated municipal pool next door to Eastern Market on Capitol Hill. I think it used to be called the Capitol East Pool, but now it's called the William H. Rumsey Aquatic Center (635 N. Carolina Ave., SE). Bet you won't be able to find anybody who knows it by that name.
Eastern Market is a cool place to check out, too, especially on weekends, when you find people selling art, furniture, antiques, pottery, soap, jewelry, music, clothing, etc. on the sidewalks. Even if you don't buy anything, it's fun to walk through. The barbeque place inside is famous.
Eastern Market itself is a couple blocks north of the Eastern Market metro station. Go to the top of the escalator, turn around the other way, walk down to the corner to cross Pennsylvania Ave (it might take a couple of lights) and walk north on 7th street.

You could live at the Smithsonian Institute and all its buildings for a year and not see it all. The zoo is pretty cool too.
If you pick the right hotel they might have an indoor pool.
