The LUNULA is a semi lunar (half moon) white region at the base of the nail plate, and it is generally found in the thumbnail of most people and in varying degrees in other fingers.
Air mixed in with keratin and cells rich in nuclei give the LUNULA is whitish color.

It's called a lunula, which is Latin for "little moon" (plural "lunulae"), on account of the crescent shape. Most people have it, but certain conditions such as hypoalbuminaemia (low albumin levels in the blood) can make it look whiter or bigger.
