Here's a situation I was in recently and I've already made up my mind, but wanted to see what you would decide. I've been wanting to fix up a car for years... I had 3 options...

Option 1: 79 Chevy Caprice sedan... It has been in the family since new and was my first car. She needs some minor to major TLC (in 5/10 condition) and isn't worth much, but has centimental value through the roof.

Option 2: 73 Ford LTD (sedan)... This is the typical old lady car. Has 70,000+/- miles and has minor wear and tear... In 9/10 condition. Wouldn't take much to get her going, though she's not worth a lot...

Option 3: 52 Ford Coupe: I've been in love with this car since I first laid eyes on it 4 years ago. Hasn't moved in 9 years. She needs major TLC, but has a nice body. A 2/10 car. Could be worth a chunk of change when finished... a project

Even though I've made up my mind, the other 2 aren't going anywhere anytime soon, so I plan on getting them later.

Which would you choose?

I actually chose to live the dream of the 52. I am still in the process of trying to find the owner for it. Wish me luck! It was a hard decision though, but I figured that the 79 Caprice is not leaving the family anytime soon, and though parts cars are abundant, you’d be surprised what you can’t find anymore. I figure I’ll give it a few years, so that (hopefully), more reproduction parts will show up. The 73 LTD is going to stay in that same garage it’s been in for the last 34 years, since no one else seems to want the car. I'll try and fix them both later. I guess we’ll see what happens.

Do you agree with my decision?

I would take the 52 coupe. As long as the body was solid you can build a dream machine up from there.

I'd start with the 73 Ford LTD. That way you can get your feet wet so to speak. That way you'll have a good idea what it takes to finish a project without a lot of expense. Then I'd do the Chevy Caprice a project that would be a little more difficult and then the Ford.

But, I'll bet you're going to do the Chevy first.

Just my opinion.

Restoring a car isn't cheap, and if you were going to plunk down the money, the 52 woulds be it as it would be more return on your investment. I'd like to see that '73 myself, but you're right; neither that or the Caprice would be worth much except to you. Both of these were built after the 1973 oil embargo and automakers were forced to build cars with emissions controls and fuel economy measures. They concentrated more on this and less on design at that point.

What are you driving everyday? If that has to be considered, I would go with the caprice. But if we're talking hobby, the 52. Obvious reasons.
